I mean they actually are almost like having a treat instead of the feeling that you are eating a mound of clay, dirt, and other unmentionables in the name of staying fit. But weeding out the good from the bad can be quite the undertaking. There are some things you should look for when searching for the top protein bar.

  • Carb Content – When you want a protein bar you want just that, protein. You don’t want protein with a truckload of carbs to go along with it. If you’re like us you want a protein bar to get in that needed protein and couple it with another snack as well. You don’t want to eat up a bunch of your calories in one bar.
  • Sugar Alcohols – The majority of protein bars out there contain sugar alcohols and you want to try and stray away from eating a lot of these. Sugar alcohols are added for flavor and while they are considered to not have an impact on your glycogen levels, they do on the other hand wreck havoc on the stomach. You’ll know what I mean if you ever eat 1 or 2 of protein bars that contain these sugars. Let’s just say that nobody will be wanting to stand close to you.
  • Fiber Content – An added bonus in good protein bars is added fiber content and this is good for 2 reasons. For one, it helps you get fiber in your diet, which most people tend to lack. The second reason that it’s good to have in a protein bar is that it helps you stay fuller longer. So when you’re in a pinch and need to have one, you won’t be starving 30 minutes later.
  • Actual Protein Content – You need to pay attention to the labels on protein bars as many will be labeled a “Protein Bar” but then only contain a 5g or a little more of protein. Don’t be duped by labeling that is misleading. You want a protein bar that is going to provide you with around 20 grams of protein. This amount has been proven to ignite protein synthesis, which is the process that helps turn protein into more muscle. It’s kind of important if your goal is to build more muscle.
  • Taste – Some people may think taste isn’t a big deal but if something doesn’t taste good, then eventually you won’t want to eat it, which defeats the purpose of the convenience of a protein bar. You want something that you like and that you don’t mind to eat, preferably something that you will perhaps even look forward to or think of as a treat. Just because it tastes good doesn’t mean that it isn’t good for you as well.

Met-Rx Protein Plus

The thing that’s hard to find when you start searching for a good protein bar is one that actually tastes good, or at the very least is edible and maybe your dog would actually eat it. Unfortunately, this protein bar isn’t much on taste, it’s not the worst thing ever but it’s definitely not a treat. But what it does have is a whopping 32 grams of protein in each bar, which is the highest in our review. With that though, it’s a little high on the fat side at 10 grams and the carbs are in the 30’s. In our opinion, it’s a useful protein bar with a ton of protein and would make a solid meal replacement. If you are looking for something that tastes great, you will be a little disappointed with these but it makes up for it with it’s protein content.

Oh Yeah! Protein Bar

These protein bars from Oh Yeah! are actually fairly tasty and again are loaded with 26- 28 grams of protein, depending on which flavor you choose. They have several flavors to choose from, most of which are pretty pleasant to eat. They are a little high on fats as these come in at 14 grams in each bar and they are high on sugar alcohols at 14 grams per bar. Eating a lot of sugar alcohols can really cause some havoc on your digestive system and leave you a bit gassy to say the least.  Again, they are around 30 grams of carbs also which makes these bars much more of a meal replacement than a snack, as they clock in at 370 calories. Bottom line, they are high on protein, little high on fats and carbs so depending on your goals this may or may not work for you.

Pure Protein Bars

If you’re looking for a protein bar that won’t break your diet, then these would probably work for you, as they only have 200 calories in each bar. They are good in the fats department as they contain 6 grams per bar and the carb content isn’t bad either at 16. They are just about right on the protein, as each bar contains 20 grams as well. They contain a small amount of sugar alcohols but nothing that should really give you much of an issue, unless you were to eat 2-3 in a day. Taste wise, they aren’t the worst we’ve ever had, but they definitely aren’t the best. Bottom line, if you eat a lot of these they can get old pretty quick, but they offer solid protein content that is fairly light in the calories department.

Promax Lower Sugar Bar

These are the lower sugar version of the ProMax protein bar line and they are a better choice than their higher sugar brother. These bars strike a pretty solid balance with 6 grams of fat, 18 grams of protein, and 19 grams of carbs once you factor in the 14 grams of fiber. They market them as an energy bar as well as a protein bar but there isn’t much there in the name of an “energy rush” or anything like that. Their advertisement as lower sugar is accurate as it contains 6 grams of sugar which is very reasonable and pretty low among most other bars. When it comes to taste, again, they aren’t the worst thing we’ve ever had but they aren’t the best thing either. With the fiber content, the offering from ProMax makes it as our #2 protein bar on the list.

Quest Protein Bars

Honestly, there is really no contest when it comes to the top protein bar on the market today, because Quest Bars have everyone beat and really it’s not even close. The first thing is they taste absolutely amazing! These things are honestly a treat, as you could swear at times you were actually eating a candy bar. It’s hard to just eat one, if we are being honest, and they have over 15 flavors, with more always coming out. Just as great tasting they are, they may be even better on their nutritional value. Each bar has around 21 grams of protein, 6-7 grams of fat and a whopping 17 grams of fiber! That means each bar roughly contains 3-6 grams of actual impact carbs depending on which flavor you go with, some having a few more carbs than others.
